Dear Dr. Starkman:
\J I wrote you last year inviting you to take part in a symposium
at the AAAS meeting on the \F1Long Term Future of the Automobile\F0.
You kindly agreed, but because of some misunderstanding, AAAS decided
not to have the symposium that year. This year they have really decided
to do it and asked me to organize it, and I am inviting you again.
The meeting is January 26-30, 1975, and we can ask for any two days,
but they don't recommend Friday.
Joe Coates of NSF-RANN will be co-arranger of the program.
We can offer you a choice of forms of participation - giving a paper
or taking part in a panel. I hope you will choose to give a paper and
that the paper will express some thinking and research at GM on why
personal transportation is desirable and how we can continue to have it
even after petroleum reserves are gone. However, if you merely want to
react to other positions, the panel would be a better place to
take part.
The panel would also be best if you were only in a position to express the
position that General Motors is \F1concerned\F0 and takes the problem
seriously.
If you want both, that also might be arranged.
I enclose a copy of the discussion questions I sent you last year in case
you don't have it at hand.
Finally, you are quite welcome to propose other participants.\.
Sincerely yours,
John McCarthy
